Public Meeting - trade union & human rights in Colombia
Committee Room 8 House of Commons, London
Tuesday 14 May 2002 (6 - 8pm)
Colombia is the most dangerous place in the world to be a trade union leader or activist. The number of trade unionists killed in Colombia over recent years is sickening. In 2001 184 were assassinated and already this year the ferocity of the assault has only intensified. Broader attacks on trade union rights and freedoms are equally commonplace. This does not stop the brave men and women of Colombia struggling for basic employment and human rights that we take in Europe take for granted.

The British Committee of the International Centre for Trade Union Rights has called this meeting to raise public awareness and concern for the violent assaults on trade union freedoms that continue in Colombia on a daily basis. The Colombian national trade union federation CUT constantly publicises the violence against its members, yet this outrage receives scarce coverage in the mainstream media.

Speakers include:

Jeremy Corbyn, MP
Mick Rix, General Secretary, ASLEF / Justice for Colombia
Alexander Lopez, former President SINTRAEMCALI public sector union, Colombia
Luis Hernandez, President SINTRAEMCALI public sector union, Colombia
