WRITING WWW.INDYMEDIA.ORG.UK ON FIVE POUND NOTES

Dave | 09.05.2002 17:44

.

Someone was telling me the other day about how he'd started writing "www.indymedia.org.uk" on five pound notes. He said that if loads of people started doing this then it would be really good publicity for the website.

Does anyone know if this is illegal? What kind of trouble could you get into for doing this?

Defacing the Queen's currency is a hangin' offence mate, put www.infowars.com on tenners too, before we have a cashless society.

I was thinking of office type rubber stamps

Any publicity is good publicity ?

I think it's a pretty good idea to put the address on £5 notes. There's one in my wallet I'm just going to do now. Spread the word !

Why stop at fivers?

Put it on tenners too.

The rubber stamp idea was a good one, too: it prevents identification via handwriting or something (probably impossible, but they might be able to use it against you in court if you get arrested for something else- some people are pretty good at making up evidence). I know there are companies which make stamps to a specified design, though it might be a good idea to look for one that will do it for cash, without a paper trail, just in case.

Defacing the Queens currency is an idea that has been around for some time. In occupied Ireland the Queen's head on coins of the realm was often illicitly stamped with little shamrocks as a sign of defiance.

Bypass the media lies. Spread the word. If you don't like the news, go out and make your own.

Our day will come...

easy stamps

you can get self-inking rubber stamps with just a frame which you insert little rubber letters into - untraceable and you can change addresses as much as you like. Available from any good stationers...

I heard about something like this last year from someone who had been an international women's conference in South Africa. One of the things that women were doing was putting a red dot on every note that passed through their hands in order to publicise how much they handle money and then contrast it with the amount they actually own themselves.

I seem to recall a similar tactic

10.05.2002 16:06

being used during the regime of one of the South American dictatorships; was it Chile ? Obviously, any legal risk being taken then would be much worse than here. Lets face it, if the system wants to get you, they'll either find a law, or make a new one...

I've been drawing moustaches on her face on fivers, tenners and twentys for years.
