Dutch right-wing leader assasinated

Today 6pm CET Pim Fortuyn, the Dutch right-wing populist leader, was shot dead.

Today 6pm CET Pim Fortuyn, the Dutch right-wing populist leader, was shot dead. Fortuyn, notorious for his racist views on asylum policies and Islam, was predicted to take next week's parliamentary elections by storm and even named as the possible new prime-minister. Police have arrested a white man of Dutch origin, aged 30-35, but have made no statements concerning his identity or possible motivation. Population, press and politicians are reacting confused. Although all mainstream political parties closed ranks against any coalition with Fortuyn this week, the acting government has expressed disgust about what is generally seen as a political assasination.

The atmosphere in the Netherlands is tense. Earlier this evening several hundred of Fortuyn supporters rioted at the parliament square, chanting racist slogans and throwing stones. Police swept the square clean and closed it off around 23:00, but people are still gathering in front of parliament, the Dam in Amsterdam and in the Mediapark, Hilversum where the murder took place. Clashes between Fortuyn supporters and people of ethnic minorities are reported. In Rotterdam a group of armed men threatened a group of immigrants.

Rumours about a possible assasination had been going round for a week already, not in the least fuelled by Pim Fortuyn himself who spoke of threats and had hired extra security. Still, confusion is the general reaction of many people and politicans who do not really know how to deal with the death of a man they had hoped would leave Dutch politics as quickly as he had entered it. Reactions on Indymedia.nl range from "a political murder is always fascist" to "I don't approve, but do understand" and "only a dead fascist is a good fascist". Discussants fear a possible '11 September' effect for leftist activism and increased fascist and racist activities.

Election campaigning has been called off and the interim government is considering an emergency law to postpone elections.

yeah - a dead one. my reaction was pretty positive. expecially in their situation, where (as i understand) his support was basically personal - cut off the head. and don't refer to any fucking 'sept 11th effect' - it doesn't exist./

Dutch Rule the World

Holland is a remarkable country very liberal on one side
with more controls than any other EU country.
A little country of 15 million.
With the worlds richest woman.
Phillips
Unilever
Shell
some serious big chemical companies with unremarkable names.
Bilderberg ( originated there)
Europol (the Hague)
International Court (the Hague)
ect ect

The dutch founded the Bank of England under William and Mary.
Rumour has it that they still own it.

200 years ago Amsterdam was the worlds commercial capital, not much has changed, loads of the biggest scummiest multi nationals are moving their admin / Base to Amsterdam right now.

Of course the dutch don't attend meetings like G8, but why should they, they do all their work out of the public view.

wotever, anyway the dutch have a lot more influence over world affairs than is generally accepted.

Not a good day

Of course no one should weep for this man, but the killing further legitimises political assassination, which is a tool much easier for the powerful to use than for the powerless.

Number 2 on the List Pim Fortuyn is a 27yo Capeverdian man, with no political experience. Neither have the people lower on the list. Fortuyn's list is made up of what we call 'vote-pullers': 'representatives' of groups Fortuyn was hoping to attract and Miss Netherlands. I do not worry too much about a more extreme fascist leader standing up from their midst.

As Geo and the name of the 'party' suggest, List Fortuyn was based on the persona of Pim Fortuyn. Harry Mens, a good friend of Fortuyn and equally crazy and media-hungry, made a statement today that Fortuyn did not have much faith in the quality of his list and he suggested that 'in the spirit of Fortuyn' the best thing for the list to do would be to withdrew from the elections (or even dissolve, don't remember). But this morning the 'leaders' of the list met with the acting prime-minister, where they agreed that elections should go on as sceduled and I have heard of no decision to the effect of withdrawing. So it's going to be even more fun with the 'martyr' votes they are now likely to attract.

About power of the Dutch: economically speaking I absolutely agree. Dutch business and money are everywhere, or at least in a lot more places than you would expect from such a small country (16mln by now ;-)). Politics is a bit more tricky. The Dutch government is indeed not part of the G8 or like bodies, but they do pay for 'activities' in many places. Many of these activities I would see positive though. As a Serbian friend of mine once put it: "Our revoution was sponsored by the Dutch government". Neo-colonial? Yes. But no big conspiracy as far as I am concerned. It's more about economic pragmatism and calvinistic moralism. If you consider the reactions to 'the phenomenon Fortuyn' it is clear the Dutch government doesn't know how to do politics very well. They are just a bunch of technocrats running a very profitable company.

What I do worry about is the effect this is already having on on extreme right. See my next article.

More concerned about the effect this is having on working class communities.

to geo:
well....
i won't cry for the man personally, but first of all, an eye for an eye... u know what i mean. and most of all: this makes the guy into a legend, this makes it impossible for him to make an ass out of himself after the elections so poeple say hm... maybe his ideas don't work after all....
his party will get more votes now than it would have gotten of this hadn't happened, and a hatecampaign against left is beginning in holland. i am from amsterdam and i can tell already.
this is horrible, i am so afraid for the effects, the guy who shot Pim Fortuyn is going to get exactly the opposite of what he wished for......
