Why no Socialist Alliance Candidate ?

Vote for me: I'll set you Free | 03.05.2002 15:25

In such dire electoral times as these, why was there no Socialist Alliance candidate in my area ?

Surely if there was a time for that serious "alternative" we keep talking about, one that any member of the public can support without putting on white overalls, the time, to coin the cliche, is now (or rather yesterday).
So why didnt the Socialist Alliance make every effort to put candidiates wherever they could ? Perhaps they couldnt find "ideal" volunteers (for ideal, read some disillusioned, stuffy ex-labour party type who's had a twinge of conscience 5 years too late). Why didnt the SA just ring round their local memebership lists until they found a volunteer ? I wouldve done it; Im up for anything and I couldve had some fun trying to figure out which 10 voters gave me their support today...

why not volunteer?

To paraphrase the IMC slogan, don't blame the Alliance, be the Alliance! Why not contact them and offer to run a campaign in your ward next time round? There's no qualification for being a candidate other than agreeing with the manifesto, which is on the website:

I'm planning to get together some friends to stand for the local elections next year on a platform to push for facilities for youth and elderly who are disadvantaged and sustainable development. We've not got a party, we've just got some idea. We might not win - it's a Tory area - but it will make people think and put these issues on the local agenda. If any of us wins, I don't know what we'd do! We're not expecting that! But it's much more fun standing for election than voting.

I think everyone should stand for the local elections - it doesn't cost anything and just requires 10 signatures. That way, there would be havoc! How about 100 anarchists standing for election in one small ward. Imagine the length of the voting list - it would be true electoral sabotage, but no-one can be prosecuted!

Anyone who 'volunteers'

anything at SWP, SA or GR meetings will tend to be shunned. Anyone trying to contribute ideas or courses of action will be ridiculed or treated with hostility. Ledden conventionality dominates the movement in Britain.

conventionality...

...may dominate the SWP / GR / SA but the SWP / GR / SA do not dominate the movement.

disclaimer: I'm not bashing these institutions (not too much anyway) - we need solidarity with these different parts of the movement. But do realise that they are not the movement, just a part of it.
