Pictures from Clarkenwell Green at 1pm, than by 3pm arriving into Trafalgar Square with the nazi-to-the-bin banner, the huge puppet that marched all the way down, some pictures of the 20,000 protestors (yes, 20,000!) having the best Mayday march, the speakers, the sun and the 4,000 strong solidarity with the sex workers march and street party in Soho. It was a great day for the anti-capitalist movement in Britain- anti-capitalists and trade-unionists marching together.

GR/SWP are dishonest (and dull)

03.05.2002 10:02

Why do swp/gr always exaggerate how many people went on a demo. It shows them as dishonest, just like when companies make fradulent claims for their products.

I deliberately use this analogy because I feel that the similarities between SWP/GR and a corporation are there. I went to the last but one anti-war demo and the meeting point was full of different stalls, but they were all selling varients of the same swp product. Different products, some of them (like GR) even new innovations of the brand - but it's the same old shite. Also SWP is about as democratic as a corporate. Anyone know who elected it's leaders and what platform they ran on?

When I spoke to people who went on the swp/gr and unions march they said that it was boring. They had made it to the soho carnival but this had nothing to do with GR. The link up between sex workers and rhythms of resistence was really cool and it took place well outside the stifling confines of SWP/GR.

It wasn't bad

Actually the march from Clerkenwell was quite good, as long as you stayed away from the SWP's GR that tried to hijack it this year.

Before the "rebirth" of Mayday as some sort of quasianarcho-pagan-newage-carnival, this event was basically kept alive by communists in exile, especially from Kurdistan, Turkey and Iran. Plenty of large militant contingents with beautiful red banners, flags, armbands etc, so it is good to march in solidarity with real living struggles.

LONG LIVE RED MAY DAY!

Ed

I see you had Tony Benn.

03.05.2002 14:00

Yes, dear old Tony Benn. The man who cried when Enoch Powell died! Say's it all about SWP/GR really.

Ronnie.

i agree!

iposted this somewhere else on indymedia ,i think it beatrs repeateing
indymedi is not a giant advertising board for the globalise Resistance/SWP corporation(tm)

Don't Globalise Resistance realise that the newswire is not for publicising their sad little front, every post has an image of some kind that links to their organisation.Notice how at least one picture will have the name of the organisation feautured prominently just as the SWP does the same with their placards. If they want to post images of protest ,fine, (thier situationist mini-front: the movement of the imagination does this ok), but indymedia is not some kind of giant billboard for the swp/gr.They just seem to replicate capitalist relations with their obsession with recruitment, sales and P/R.

btw, ppl are getting fed up of seing Guy Taylor's mug all over the media trying to hijack what is a broad and open movement...someone pie him...

Solidaritad, amigos

GR did have an amazing may day. They looked magnificent with all their banners.

And what do you mean "Tony Benn cried when Enoch Powell died - says it all about the SWP/GR".

Are you saying that tony benn is a right wing racist?
Because blatently he's not. ditto SWP/GR

I wouldn't want to be in the SWP or GR but they're part of the movement and we should welcome that. And yeah they have they're faults but let's stop going on about that - it's boring. We need less bickering and more solidarity. SWP/GR may be far from perfect (as opposed to the rest of us) but they are not the enemy!

Don't pie Guy Taylor. Pie the capitalists. Infact don't even pie the capitalists - just pie capitalism itself :-)
