Fascists Win 2 Council Wards

Anti-Fascist | 03.05.2002 07:11

The BNP has been elected twice in Burnley

The neo-fascist BNP have won two councill wards in Burnley. The racists in question are David John Edwards and Carol Hughes. No fascists were elected in Oldham.

Fascism doesn't have the intellectual respectibility or middle class support in the UK that it has in the rest of western Europe. Nevertheless Hitler was elected and the Chartists/Suffrigetes died for the universal franchise.

IT IS A MORAL OBLIGATION TO GO TO THE BALLOT BOX. IF THERE ARE NO ANARCHIST/SOCIALIST CANDIDATES THEN STAND FOR ELECTION OR DEFACE YOUR PAPER.

The fact is that one in five people voted for the BNP where it stood. That means 20 per cent of the population is potentially fascist - far higher than any other European country. As someone in a mixed-race marriage, after these elections I am genuinely scared. We agreed if the UK became like France or Italy where fascists have also gained widespread support, then we would leave the country. We don't want to live in fear of persecution or attack by the BNP and other violent racist groups. It's not running away from a problem, it's the desire to live in peace as a family. So, it's time to find the exit from fascist Britain. I blame the major parties for generating this climate of hostility towards ethnic minorities with their vile rhetoric against asylum seekers and their desire to force 'assimilation' into what they regard as the 'national culture'. David Blunkett helped the BNP to power by giving racism respectability. I can't live in a country or continent where racism is the dominant theme.

Don't be misled. The BNP got between 10-26% of the vote where they stood, but they only stood in about 60 wards where they know their support is strongest, out of thousands nationally. Their two wins are because they got 26% in wards with multiple councillors, so winning the second or third places.

In other words, the population haven't suddenly gone Nazi!

But having said that, of course we need to mobilise urgently. The BNP will make the most of the publicity they get from this. Anti-racists and anti-fascists need to hold our nerve, remember we are the majority, and get organised.
