The Movement of the Imagination - www.movementoftheimagination.org.uk - put an open-air exhibition of posters and banners on the back wall of Trafalgar Square, while the 15 foot high Bush-Blair-Berloscuni-Sharon puppet was marching down from Clerkenwell Green.

The posters were produced by various artists for this Mayday exhibition to be presented alongside union banners. Some of the posters were carried in previous demonstrations: the Stop the War Coalition demos in London, WEF demonstration in New York Jan/Feb 2002, EU summit demonstration Belgium Dec 2001. This way of producing and presenting art works is a rejection and a challenge to the ways that the art institution operates: It is open for everyone; a non hierarchic form of submission, using a public space in a direct political context, works were shown with union-banners and were taken by the audience in the end of the event.

The puppet was a collective effort to erect a medieval war-machine, identifying usurpation with iconic rulers of the new empire and its loyal servants; by doing this we turned the war-instrument into a machine in the service of peace.

The Movement of the Imagination is a collaboration between artists-activists that arises from, and work within the political and social movement of anti-capitalism.
