Starting a workplace Union
re-post | 02.05.2002 11:21
I along with colleagues have tried to gain union recognition for the place we
work at the Company (MFI UK LTD) were very anti union but with ever increasing
pressures put upon us we decided to start a union anyway with great success I
may add we now have 60% membership of the workplace (Stockton site)
Unfortunately the Company decided on a union of its own the TGWU who I might
add did not have 1 member at my place of work the ISTC had in excess of 200
The TGWU had agreed a sweetheart deal with management and we now have the situation where 30+ people are deciding the rights on 400
Bill Morris leader of the TGWU proclaims workers rights, social justice,
fighting towards better pay and conditions for its members
Well in the past year of this union being imposed upon us they have agreed to
a £50 reduction in wages for new Starters and Temps, a pay rise less than the
National Average even though the company made over 1 billion in profit, no
consolidation from bonus into basic as agreed the previous year
I ask Mr Morris where is the social justice in that, what better pay
conditions has his union acquired for us NONE
When the TGWU representatives appeared on site they had no idea that another
union was trying for recognition (their head office had failed to inform them)
well they went away hurt and bruised after the barracking they received but
not before one of the officials stated that the TGWU were looking at £200.000
of untapped income
Money not workers needs, money not workers concerns, we are now in the
situation where we have 2 unions the TGWU and the ISTC
The TGWU is not wanted on our site
We do not want a management based union we want a union that will fight for
our rights our concerns
Please feel free to visit the www.hystc.com site and read what we have been
trying to achieve these past years and please lend your support
