Report of the New Cross and Deptford Radical History Walk, Sunday April 28th, part of the Mayday Festival of Alternatives
50+ people took part in the New Cross and Deptord Radical History Walk on Sunday. The walk started with a rendition of the Red Flag by the local Strawberry Thieves Socialist Choir - the song was written in New Cross to commemorate the executed Chicago anarchists of 1886. After this we wandered through the rain down to the River Thames, taking in medieval rebellions, Chartists, the General Strike, Bread Riots, 19th century anarchists, the slave trade and the old Deptford Jack in the Green May Day parade, suppressed b the police in the early 20th century. A full write up will be appearing on the Practical History website soon.
