Mayday "Invest in Caring not Killing" Open Day

Crossroads Women's Centre | 30.04.2002 13:26

Women and men are welcome to drop in on Friday 3 May between 12 noon-7pm for an afternoon of videos and exhibitions with the theme "Invest in Caring, Not Killing".
Among the attractions will be a display and information about the Global Women's Strike - international grassroots actions every 8 March.

Women in over 80 countries have taken part in the Strike. There will be an exhibition of unique information and photos of Strike actions including from: Argentina, Ghana, Guyana, India, Ireland, Spain, Peru, Trinidad, Uganda, different cities in the US, London and others. We'll show a thirty-minute video about Strike events in many countries with Spanish subtitles, at different times throughout the afternoon starting at 1pm.

The Strike website will be open for people to browse. Information about the Strike will be available for people to take away in 34 languages.

The Strike demands that society "Invest in Caring, Not Killing" and is women's reply globally to US economic, political and military domination of the world. We demand a world which values all women's work and every life, an end to America's new war and all wars. We call for a transfer of the $900 + billion military budget into the essentials of life: water, sanitation, health, nutrition, literacy and payment for all caring work.

We will also play other videos which reveal some of the history of the women's movement against overwork, including the pathbreaking "All Work and No Pay", a BBC "Open Door" documentary from 1976 with people from our Centre.
