Jon at ICFFMAJ in Devon | 29.04.2002 09:07

Ex-Panthers Robert King Wilkerson and Althea Francois are over here from Louisiana in the deep south of the US. He and she will speak at a number of venues as part of a UK wide tour.

KING AND ALTHEA'S SPEAKING TOUR

Oppose Injustice! Challenge Racism! Fight Oppression! Black prison activists

They are here doing a UK wide speaking tour to raise awareness of the extreme racism, brutality and injustice of the Louisiana criminal "justice" system, and to get support
for the very many victims of this injustice. Come and hear them talk and find out how you can help support their vital work.

About Robert King Wilkerson
Robert King Wilkerson was held in solitary confinement in Angola maximum security prison in Louisiana USA for 27 years for crimes he did not commit.

King was framed because of his political organising at the prison as a member of the Black Panther party. He was released in February 2001 after a long campaign and is now spending his time doing speaking tours around the world, raising awareness of the brutality, corruption, racism and injustice ingrained in the Louisiana criminal justice system. King's co-accused Albert Woodfox and Herman Wallace are still in prison and are entering their thirtieth year of solitary confinement
..
About Althea Francois
Althea Francois joined the Black Panther Party in 1970. She worked as the Party's New Orleans health officer and raised funds for the breakfast programmes for school children. Later as a direct result of the high levels of imprisonment of Black Panthers at this time Althea began supporting
political prisoners and others in prison in Louisiana. In 2001 Althea became a member of the Prison Activists Resource Center's Advisory board. (This is based in California and helps prisoners and prison activists from all over the US) She also co-founded the New Orleans Prison Organizing Resource Centre, and was hired as its director in 2002
