If the left is not able to defend local jobs for local people, local production for local products the situation may descend into what is already happening to parts of London.
After having decimated manufacturing over a twenty year period under Thatcherism, Blairism argues that it wants to restructure the public services. Which in reality means implementing the Brussels agreements of a deregulated privatised 'public' service whose eventual shape and look will be similar to what goes for manufacturing nowadays. A skeleton product only for those who can afford to pay.
Already in Hospitals and in Education 20-30% of posts are filled with service agency contracts (so beloved and promoted by Blair) following on the heels of the deregulation of the London bus service and the coming deregulation of the Post Office and the Tube. The purpose isn't simply to fill in the new posts with new immigrants. This is the outcome. The purpose is the smashing of union representation, the creation of short term work contracts with no rights, no pensions and lower wages, usually 40% lower. This is the North American model so beloved of by politicians.
A section of the population whether in England, France or Germany is appalled in this situation. The left having sold out to Big Business asserts the globalisation of labour is socialism in disguise yet poverty and wealth grow enormously and whole parts of the world resemble a giant car boot sale. Unable to resist the corporate agenda workers vote for whomever they feel might arrest this development. the turn towards the rightists in Austria, Italy, now France will clearly show this not to be the case.
Deregulation and pro-Americanism alongside the globalisation of labour are what drive the corporate agenda forward.
If the left doesn't fight to defend todays meagre labour conditions it will be unable to arrest the advance of corporate fsacism tomorrow.
