Chats palace in Hackney was the scene last night of much drinking, dancing and discussion. Stalls run by refugee groups were well received as was a traditional Roma band. Two other bands also played making this a most excellent begining to the Festival of Alternatives.
By the end of the night the venue was packed much of the crowd arriving with the Critical Mass earlier in the evening. Also the forces of darkness were kind enough not to show up, which has to be a first for a Mayday related event. WELL DONE TO EVERYONE INVOLVED!

We need more squats like Chats Palace!

That gig reminds me of the excellent gigs and raves we used to have on a regular basis at the cooltan squat in Brixton. We need to open up get running more large community based squats like Chats Palace! There used to be a good one in Camden a few years ago in the old Parkway cinema that used to put on excellent events as well. All over Britain there are large disused buildings that could be put to excellent use like Chats Palace!

The Festival Has Begun!
The Festival Has Begun!

The gig was the first night of the Mayday Festival Of Alternatives ( http://www.ourmayday.org.uk)having seen the picket in solidarity with Paul Robinson and a chill critical mass protest earlier in the day.

A building was also squatted to serve as a social centre for the period of the festival
