Of course it is stupid to blame the SWP for creating police violence. But in what way exactly has the SWP undermined the independent socialist movement, such as it is? We have argued against the tactics and strategy of the Wombles, because it just doesn't work. What is the point of having a bunch of people on demonstrations, kitted out in this fetishistic padding (and I mean that in every sense of the word) and pretending to act on everyone else's behalf? This doesn't stop the police from being violent. The only demonstrations I have been on where the police have not used violence or intimidation have been the very big ones where they feel like they might get their arses kicked.
Anyway, to argue against the tactics and strategy of Womble-ism is not quite the same way as undermining the Wombles. We do not physically stop you from doing what you want to do. We argue and debate, as democratic socialists should. If you think that makes us rightful candidates to be manhandled by coppers, then I suggest you go back to clearing up crap on Wimbledon Common. Thank you, drive thru!

The least I can say about your comment is that it doesn't rise to the level of the argument. If you're acting for yourselves, then what do you propose everyone else does while you're all farting about with the police? I mean, mass demonstrations will inevitably have a variety of tactics, and it is right and proper that there should be a debate as to which works best. The SWP does not agree that a bunch of people padded up will make a difference to the success of a demonstration. Possibly, I could be convinced otherwise, but I've been on enough demonstrations to have my doubts. Padding is fine as a fashion statement, but terrible as a strategy for success.

Well, for once I think we can dispense with the mandatory Trot vs. Anarchist debate. The Kissinger demo was absolutely brilliant - 100% solidarity in the face of overwhelming police violence. If Globalise Resistance goes on like this, there won't be anything for anarchists (like me) to carp about!

By the way, congratulations to the bloke who managed to knock off that police constable's helmet . . . very nearly ended up taking that home as a souvenir!

odd how GR go 'direct' just before mayday, and odd how easily people are swayed...
hasnt it occurred to you that this little protest was staged in order to regain some 'cred' with the direct action people and perhaps pull them away from mayday to trafalgar ?
i thouight it was a bit like some fading rock star trying to reclaim a former high point in his declining career.
finally, its easy to oppose mad yank zionists like kissinger but what about blair and blunkett ? then the GR tactics change, dont they?

Its tiresome but essential to repeat this: you have condemned the above "bill bore" for a police agent on the strengths of a few pithy criticisms. That my friend is STALINISM of the worst kind. Its an outrage, and confirms my own fears about the modern left in Britain.

Wombles/padding as a tactic

How on earth can anyone claim, after last years Mayday, that padding is merely a 'fetish' or that it doesn't work as a tactic? The wombles made a huge difference, freeing up people who otherwise might have spent hours detained and cordoned. The only reason they weren't as successful as they could have been was because there weren't enough of them! We need more people to womble up, in their affinity groups, for this year's Mayday. (Wombling ALONE, however is probably not a good idea given police targeting of white overalls recently.)

PS The wombles don't claim to act for everybody, in fact they encourage everybody to wear padding for their own protection, not rely on them to act on their behalf.

PPS I agree that huge numbers of people on a demo are an even better method of protection against police attacks, at least when they act in solidarity with each other.

It was an effective and essential demo! Especially emotional was to see the South-American people there, who had witnessed the consequences of Kissinger's influence: they were among the most motivated...
