The demonstrators were joined by a group campaigning against Henry Kissinger.

The former US Secretary of State is due to address the annual Institute of Directors convention.

A huge puppet depicting Dr Kissinger was erected on the pavement outside the venue by the Get Kissinger Group.

It plans to hold a mock trial accusing the 78-year-old of being a war criminal because of his involvement in events in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

Scores of protesters banged drums and chanted "war criminal" and "this is what democracy looks like".

There was heavy security outside the conference venue but police stood by as the protesters sat on the main road outside the Royal Albert Hall.

The theme of the conference was globalisation and had been expected to spark protest from campaigners.

The demonstrators later ended their sit-down protest.
