Historic Launch Of Chinese Race Group - Min Quan The Monitoring Group In Chinatown
History was made yesterday with the launch of the first ever race monitoring and campaigning group involving the UK’s Chinese community. Over 150 specially invited guests attended the positive, powerful and emotive launch to hear keynote speeches from lmran Khan, an eminent civil rights lawyer, and David Yip the only recognised Chinese actor in the UK. The speeches followed contributions from Jabez Lam, a Chinese community leader and worker at The Monitoring Group (TMG) and Suresh Grover, co-ordinator of TMG and chair of the National Civil Rights Movement. Both described the work of the group, its aims and vision. Bobby Chan, a Chinese community leader who has worked with clients in Chinatown for over 25 years, chaired the meeting. The gathering also heard from Chinese victims and their families suffering race attacks and murders, including Mr Lee whose son died in suspicious circumstances in Canterbury over 19 months ago. Initially the Lee family was denied access to their son’s body for over 10 months and he still remains unburied.
According to Imran Khan, the launch of Min Quan represented a positive development in the Chinese community and a serious challenge to those who wished to reverse the Lawrence agenda for community empowerment and the accountability of police and government services. “For too long racism against the Chinese has remained unacknowledged. How many Chinese victims do we need to recognise the problem?” David Yip supported the launch because of his wish that the skills and merit of Chinese individuals be recognised by the mainstream including in the arts world. “I attend big public events all the time and most of the time I am the only Chinese face. Sometimes though another joins me. Normally it is a waiter or waitress serving food!”
