MAY18 PALESTINE SOLIDARITY ANTI-CAPITALIST BLOC

DAAWN! | 22.04.2002 08:16

DAAWN! (Direct Action Against War Now) are calling for an Anti-Capitalist, Anti-Militarist, Anti-Racist Carnival Bloc to participate in the National Rally for Palestine on Saturday May 18.
Please spread the word/distribute widely.

Anti-Capitalist, Anti-Militarist, Anti-Racist Carnival Bloc

National Rally for Palestine, Saturday 18 May 2002. Meet at 12 noon @ Speakers’ Corner, Hyde Park. Tube: Marble Arch.

At the last Palestinian Solidarity demonstration in London on April 13 there was by all accounts a tiny anti-capitalist presence. This resulted from concern about anti-Semitic and/or “fundamentalist” factions within the demo and confusion about how we as autonomists relate to the Palestinians’ demand for their own state. Any accusations that we’d rather spend the time in a pub are of course a total fabrication . . .

To avoid these problems and also to ensure a strong anti-capitalist presence at the next such demo on May 18, DAAWN are calling for an Anti-Capitalist, Anti-Militarist, Anti-Racist Carnival Bloc.

We will demonstrate to our critics in the corporate media that anti-capitalists do not inhabit an ideological ghetto, cut off from the daily realities of ordinary people. To this end, we aim to link activists who oppose the capitalist system and its wars across the cultural divide. We can achieve this not merely by “inviting” people of colour to passively participate in our action, but to harness the energy and vitality of pre-existing activist networks that campaign on subjects as diverse as environmental justice to police brutality.

The so-called "race riots" last year demonstrated that many young Muslims are disillusioned with capitalism and the government and they are likely to be open to our ideas. The activist community should not internalise the corporate media propaganda about Islamic "radicals" taking over society. Islam can be a tolerant and progressive religion. The concerns of most young Muslims are potentially our concerns. Their fears are our fears. The state wants to artificially divide us. We mustn’t let them segregate our struggle into black and white dimensions. That is how they will break us. Many of us have strong opinions about the merits or otherwise of religious belief, but nonetheless we must reach out to those outside the traditional “anti-capitalist” protest community if we wish to build a movement which truly threatens state/corporate power.

It is not our desire to take over the march, merely to demonstrate autonomy within solidarity. Think crazy banners, flags and props. Think costumes, jugglers and dancers. Think music, drums and whistles. Think love, rage and creativity.

"Underneath the paving stones, a beach."

I dunno...

Hmmm, well I helped organise the anticapitalist bloc on the November antiwar demo, but I think that in this instance perhaps an anticapitalist bloc isn't the best idea?

I mean - what's happening in Palestine is so fucking awful and I think that it would look as if we were "hijacking" the protest. Also I don't know if everyone's going to be too burned out so soon after Mayday.

If you were calling it a Direct Action Bloc then I wouldn't have a problem with it. I don't want to sound as if I'm toning down my anarchism but I think that possibly in a pro-palestinian (people, not State) demo direct action in the name of the palestinian people would be more effective than in the name of anticapitalism.

anti cap bloc for anti caps

i dont think having an anti cap bloc hijacks the cause or march. All the lazy anti-caps cant be arsed to haul their arses out for any of the palestine demos recently which is why the anti cap bloc has been called, it will be a DA bloc but the name is too encourage anti caps to take an intrest in pro palestine marches!

IN SUPPORT OF THE BLOC

It is high time that anti-capitalists stood up to be counted on the issue of supporting the Palestinian struggle -a struggle waged aginst the might of the US and its allies in the middle east. Judging by Red and Black's response to DAAWN's call for a broad based anti-capitalist bloc it would seem as if there are still far too many 'anti-capitalists' who are simply lifestyle anarchists. Well if you are a genuinely revolutionary anti-capitalist then May 18 is the time to get out onto the streets and join the bloc to show that there are anti-capitalists who are prepared to oppose the aggression of the US and Israel and support the struggle of the Palestinian people.
