Bermondsey was yet again the scene of another march by the fascist NF today. A total of 62 boneheads and assorted nazis arrived at bermondsey south station for another pitiful parade parade around one of south londons most deprived areas. This was almost double the turnout of previous events though this was largely down to the fact that it was Hitler's birthday and the demo was advertised on the combat 18 website. There is no evidence that the NF are growing, recently they have suffered some serious internal problems.
Around 80 anti fascists in the form of the Anti Nazi League and Revolution turned up to oppose the demo and were unsurprisingly penned in by police for the duration of the event.
What did however shock people was the size and scale of the Police operation. 1 helicopter, nearly 500 officers, 4 camera teams and for what?
To allow 60 braindead nazis to break the law. Everything from their banners & leaflets to what they were chanting was technically speaking illegal under the race relations act. To add insult to injury this monumental waste of our taxes started several hours early. According to a Lib-dem councillor the police had started flooding the area and surrounding estates as early as 9.am (the demo started at 2.pm).
"It's not like they have any support round here" complained one local man. In fact less than ten people
turned up to cheer the NF on, considerably less than last time. Around ten school children also followed the march.
So the next time the police are moaning about how underfunded they are, its worth remembering that they are willing to spend tens of thousands protecting an illegal gathering of organised racists. Meanwhile streetcrime is running out of control in impoverished areas like Brixton and Hackney and nothing is being done about it. So much for the lessons learned from the Lawrence report.

Is it worth opposing such marches?

20.04.2002 19:03

Is it worth turning out to oppose such marches when the National Front are so tiny and have so little support? I don't think so. The anti-racist movement is way behind the times it is mostly run by the Anti-Nazi League a front organisation for the SWP which was set up in the late seventies mainly as a recruiting forum for the SWP.

Fighting fascism today is pointless there are other much more important struggles such as the campaign for the Palestinians who are face terror and genocide at the hands of the Israeli armed forces! Also the global struggle against global capitalism and organisations like the IMF, WTO and World Bank. We should be putting all our energy into finghting these things.

Methinks anti-fascist action is still needed

I think that it is ridicolous to suggest that fighting fascism is less important then fighting globalisation and the Israeli state. All these things are inter-linked as part of the capitalist system. It is ignorant to say that the Nazis are not a threat anymore and that a radical anti-racist movement is no longer needed. Try telling that to the Asian community in the North of England where the BNP might actually win local elections. Also one cant forget the racist violence against Muslims. Even if there is one fascist marching we should still turn out and oppose him. The main problem is that the anti-racist movement should be rooted in the community and it should be the community which should spearhead these campaigns no outsiders from the ANL and SWP who come into many communities do a bit of leafleting, postering, organise a counter demo or two and then bugger off into the sunset. At the demo today, a black man expressed the opinion to the ANL in a very angry tone. Something new is needed and also ethnic minorities, be they Black, Asian or Muslim must start to organise progressively and radically so that there is a permanent anti-racist movement at the grassroots level which doesnt hav to rely on SWP, ANL, leftist and anarchist outsiders, although their "mutual assistance" will still be needed.

what do you mean

20.04.2002 21:13

"fighting fascism is pointless"?!

it is always vital to fight, resist, dispempower, and generally prevent the spread of fascism, wherever it is, and whatever form it takes.

anl maybe swp-led and palestine (congo, chechnya, afghanistan etc etc etc) currently burning, but that certainly doesn't mean we should let the bnp et al have it their way round here.

no pasaran!

It's always worth it.

It's always worth confronting the fucking bastards. Even one to one, it's worth giving the twats a good kicking. You can't reason with shite and they're the living proof of that. Don't wait for the yellow lollipop brigade. Steam in, kick arse and hop it.

Er

Wasn't 80, it was more like 40 antis at most, and the SWP just turned it into a party political for the SA

piss off steelgate

steelgate, i would have thought tonights news reguarding the national front in france would be a good enough reason to remind ppl that fascism is on the rise and not very far from being a more accepted form of politics on these shores.
if these cunts go unopposed then they will spread their cancer a lot quicker.
you've already been banned from u75 for your shit views, why dont you try posting on sites that will agree with your right wing crap! f.o.a.d.

Met NF sympathisers

As far as I could see, I was the only, lonely anti-nazi that managed to follow the march down to Bermondsey station. Some of the pigs leading the march seemed to be enjoying themselves much too much. None of the pigs that I spoke to cared what the knuckle-dragging thugs got up to once they were escorted to the station. Presumably they won't care too much when the next racially motivated attack happens before or after another march. The white trash were lead to a cul-de-sac next to Bermondsey tube where they had a couple of speakers. One officer singled me out and escorted me behind the police line because it was clear that I had 'extreme views'. Clearly this pig thought that shouting 'shame' to a bunch of Nazis qualified as an extreme view. After chatting with another bunch of ocifers they pointed out how they (and the 2 token black cops) were standing well out of earshot of the race hate boolshit. They also pointed out a whole bunch of their collegues who were huddled round the Nazis, faces beaming, tuning in to their every word, clearly lapping it up. It was seeing the ugly pig/neanderthaal face of institutional racism that bothered me more than the few skins that couldn't even fill a cu-de-sac. If the Met really wanted to rid itself of it's institutionally racist label then it would set up a scheme where the good cops (oxymoron?) could shop their Nazi collegues for 're-education'. At the moment the NF in Bermondsey are a joke, but that's not to say that we shouldn't keep tabs on them and stop them from stirring up race hate among their friends in the Met.

Community level politics

22.04.2002 17:39

Its true something new is needed. But to say that we should be spending time on going to summits for demos (or even anti-war demos) is a bit stupid. What does that achieve, really at the end of the day? We're constantly reacting but never setting the agenda. The only people this suits is the SWP who can recruit around the periphery of such demos; hence why the ANL is a 'good idea'.

The BNP for the last 7 years or so have been 'helping the community' by listening to the problems of old and young alike and then getting things done. This is why they can pull votes in, cos they've put in the hard graft to build up respect in areas. The NF are irrelevent.

AFA recognised the need to do the same and initiated the Independent Working Class Association to do the same thing. Various anarchists and socialists work on the pilot schemes across the country, though of course this is a drop in the ocean compared to what needs to be done to fill the political vacuum on our housing estates.
