This is a call for revolution
We exist within a community of life
Our choices influence the course of existence
Are we leading or are we being led
Will we choose peace or war

33: Is war our basic human nature

Some people maintain that a life of peace and a life of war are not something we individually choose. They believe every infant mind is born ready to fight within a war of all against all for their individual survival. Our basic human nature is claimed to be a constant state of war. Scientific evidence is often cited to prove that humans are naturally aggressive, violent and intolerant of others. Human beings certainly are capable of living a life of war and currently do.

If our basic human nature forces us into a life of war, then how do so many people manage to live a life of peace? Do these people have magical powers allowing them to overcome the forces of nature? Obviously, our basic human nature must also include elements of peace. Survival has been achieved peacefully throughout history. We don't need scientific evidence to prove that humans are naturally caring, intelligent and heroic. Human beings certainly are capable of living a life of peace and currently do.

If we really want to put a label on our basic human nature, we should look for something shared by every human being. The human species has the ability to think about life. Since we can think, this rare quality partly defines us as a species.

A life of war shouldn't be labeled as our basic human nature. War is just one possible reaction to our ability to think. Many people think about life and choose to react peacefully. We all have the ability to choose between a life of peace or a life of war and that is why it is such an important decision to make.

Humans naturaly peacful

Humans are i believe naturaly peacful and socially responsive, prefering to live in harmony with each other. The original condition of the human species is one of hunter gatherer, the skills required for hunting prey initiated a co-operative instinct within humans so as to maximize our hunting potential.People have lived within groups both large and small for most of human history.
With the historic development of civilizations however there developed new socio-political pressure,ie the appearance of religions, and new technological advances that ensured competition for scarce resources.Populations began to expand and complicated political frictions encouraged the militarization of societies.Although the above offers only a over simplified record of human history, the psychology of war developed as a response to the historical development of complex civilizations.
The advance of capitalism and the nation state further encouraged a centralization of political power, which in turn controlled the mass of population via strong propogandistic methods. This all remains a simplification of the facts surounding both the development of human civilzation and the psychology of war, however a picture soon emerges of the conflict and friction that these processes created. In the end analysis the answer to the question is humanity naturaly prone to warlike behaviour lies somewhere within what as already been discussed, however the complexity of the issues involved cannot be overestimated. My own personal inclination is that we all must be more tolerant of each other, alongside this i believe that real education must play a large part in ensuring understanding between all peoples and nations. The geopolitical situation as of this present time suggests that we have a long way to go as yet to achieve this goal, however it does remain possible.
