Environmental activists counter UN summit on Biodiversity in The Hague, the Netherlands.

On Monday April 8 the 6th Conference of the Parties (COP6) of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) opened in The Hague, the Netherlands. Until April 19 government delegates, technical experts and business lobbyists are contemplating the state of the world's biodiversity resources, as part of a global review process of the UN Rio Earth Summit in 1992 and its impacts. Concurrently, NGOs and pressure groups have joined environmental activists and farmers for a parallel gathering Resistance is Fertile! that calls for protection of farmers rights and a stop on the spread of GMOs and the plunder of natural resources for profit.

Through workshops, actions and festivities farmers, environmental campaigners, activists and producers are sharing experiences and informing people in and around the summit of their concerns. A guerrilla garden has been opened, a Critical Mass of 150 cyclists visited the UN-conference and a sambaband entered a supermarket to inform Saturday afternoon shoppers about the GM contents of their carts. Several activists were left dangling on the outside of the European Patent Office when security guards tried to prevent them from dropping a banner stating ‘No Patents on Life. Resistance is Fertile!’. Resistance is Fertile! will reach its highpoint during the International Day of Farmers’ Struggles on April 17.
