Cumbria's nuclear industry provokes anger

Anti-nuclear activists from Norway are expected at the Sellafield nuclear power plant in Cumbria.
Protesters from campaign group the Neptune Network have been travelling to the site to show their opposition to radioactive emissions in the North Sea.

About 20 activists, accompanied by Norwegian business people who have put money into the Neptune Network, were expected at the plant on Wednesday.

The group believes the discharge of a radioactive waste substance called Technetium 99 is dangerous to marine life and is damaging the Norwegian fishing industry.

Serial protests

British Nuclear Fuels Limited says only small, non-threatening quantities of the substance are present as discharge from the plant.

Traces of radioactivity have been detected in shellfish and seaweed in Norway.

The activists are expected to march around the perimeter fence and visit a statue erected on an earlier visit.

Previous protests around the plant have brought traffic to a standstill and resulted in arrests.

Meanwhile, an anti-Sellafield postcard campaign spearheaded by the wife of the Irish rock star Bono is under way.

Ali Hewson hopes more than a million postcards will be sent from households throughout the Republic of Ireland to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The cards, aiming to protect the east coast of Ireland from pollution, demand the plant is shut down.
