Hackney estates celebrate saved community centre

Marcon and Aspland Estates | 05.04.2002 10:14

Residents of Aspland Estate and Marcon Court are celebrating our success in saving our community hall by putting it to good use.

The hall is now host to a weekly youth club evening, African dancing session, self-defence class and two toddler groups!

The Tenants' and Residents' Association is turning our attention to problems with repairs and improvements on the two estates. Basically, the Council does not do them properly! Marcon Court has not been refurbished for two decades, rubbish is left uncollected, and the playground is a hazard to children. On Saturday 6 April, we will be staging a protest about the risk to residents of
the unsafe state of the windows.

On Monday 8 April at 7pm at the Community Hall (corner of Marcon Place and Amhurst Road), the TRA is hosting a Council candidates' hustings. All parties standing candidates in Hackney Central ward are being invited, including Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Socialist Alliance. Residents will have the opportunity to make their views known and to grill the party
representatives. What will they do for us? Why would they be any different from the others? Why should we trust them with our services, our homes and our estates? Refreshments will be provided, and all residents of central Hackney
are welcome.
