Demo at Israeli Embassy, London

Dafydd Roberts | 01.04.2002 23:34

Short report on Monday's demo at Israeli Embassy and on future plans - including Tuesday 2nd April

The demo at Downing Street today, called by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign to protest against current Israeli actions in the Occupied Territories, and attended by some 100 people, started at mid-day and ended at 2.15 p.m.

Many of those present in Whitehall then went on to a rather larger demonstration opposite the Israeli Embassy, which started at 3.00 p.m. and continued until 7.15 p.m.

This was attended by perhaps some 500 people, an angry, militant and cheerful crowd - for the most part Palestinians - who kept themselves going through their long vigil with slogans, chants and songs.

The organisers of this second demonstration - who I am unfortunately not in a position to identify, not having planned to report on the demo - have called for people to assemble again in the same place, opposite the Israeli Embassy, in Kensington High Street, at 5.00 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday 2nd April, and are planning to keep up a daily demonstration as long as need be.

The UK was sadly under-represented today, and we can only hope that more of us in future will take the opportunity to show our solidarity with the Palestinians in this time of grave danger. It is their spirit and their refusal to give in that is one of the best protections we have against American and British plans for war in the Middle East.

Others more informed, please feel free to comment or make another post on this story - I am sending these few bare details only because no-one has posted anything else.
