How to close a military base with 4 people

D10 member | 31.03.2002 15:50

On Thursday morning, 4 activists shut the main gate to Northwood joint military forces hq

On Thursday morning, four activists from the D10 collective and an "obstruction for peace" banner blockaded the main gate at Northwood for half an hour with vehicles waiting to enter and leave the base.

The police response was formulaic, send a couple of officers to try to persuade the activists that they could protest all day on the other side of the road, but if they remained there then they would be arrested. They refused to move, until enough reinforcements arrived in sufficient numbers that they could realistically start arresting people and then retired to a local cafe for breakfast.

This was a simple, empowering action that shows how four people can have an effect on the millitary without spending the rest of the day in a police cell and without weeks of organisation. Actions such as this could and should be taking place on a weekly basis. Talk to a few friends, find your local base and go disrupt!!

Or come to workshop/open meeting that the group are holding during the Festival of Alternatives.

Closure of Military Bases

Well Done. It is amazing what can be done with a few people. We, in the Exeter Stop The War Coalition did a similar thing, back in November, outside Lympstone Commando Marine Base, near Exeter. Only around 6 people, but more police & press, it was good natured, except the nation press photographer tried to get us to storm the camp. All in all, we closed the camp for over an hour, while we stood around with a large banner, stating "Cannon Fodder for Whom?".

A little can go a long way.
