Yarls Wood - will it return?

Bleeding Heart | 31.03.2002 09:51

Protest at Yarls Wood Concentration Camp joined by activists from Campsfield, Bristol etc.

Despite protests going on elsewhere the Protest outside the gates at Yarls Wood was well attended. Very passionate speeches by organisers and some ex-detainees, reminding us all that when they flea persecution in their own countries they face a load more here in the UK!

The Group Four guards on the gate were very interested in what the ex-detainees had to say about the treatment meted out to asylum seekers:

- 23 hour lock ups,
- denied access to religious materials and ceremonies
- no money unless they can prove destitution
- £2 phone card - when used to ring London lawyers money runs out in minutes
- when a detainee started singing they were told to SHUT UP by Group 4 thugs
- men kept separated from their families

There's whole lot more!
A real litany of human rights abuses that would keep an army of lawyers in work for years. So much for human rights protection so much for the much vaulted Human Rights Act 2000! Human rights only if you can afford it.
There's only one answer tear down the fences and protect your rights and the rights of refugees through non-violent direct action.

yours
