Ok Cafe Open for Easter -

The hearing went the only way it could have gone really. There is no dispute about who owns it so we went to court on Monday the 25th of March to try and get some discression from the judge. The judge was totally sympathetic to the aims of the OK cafe and seemed genuinely gutted that he had to provide the necessary bit of paper to chuck everyone out.

News !!

This position endorses the OK cafe's policy of opening disused commercial space and using it creatively, housing homeless people, and creating a non-commercial space where people can chill out.

Now it's just a case of negoticating with the owners, baliffs etc- saying that if the occupants try to resist then it'll cost them a lot of money as far as eviction costs go. So it'd be better to wait a bit. This has been the case will all previous cafes - and works well.

This has already been effective - We've heard that the cafe is definately going to be open over Easter!!! There's a fallafel night tonight Wednedsay the 27th.

There is also a Video on line of a Subvertising workshop
that took place at the cafe

The Ok cafe Web site is

come along and enjoy what time we have left!

It's near where the Hacienda used to be -
keep going to Deansgate and turn left at the big scupture of the bicycle.

I was part of the collective that squatted the last Okasional cafe.

In terms of doing it yourself:- it might be worth finding out if anyone is involved in doing squatted social centres/free parties near you.

For example, in Leeds a collective have set up a few squatted social centres under the "Aspire" banner.

You can usually find people with experience of squatting through Direct Action, Punk, Free Party Crew, Anarchist type circles. If you don't know of anything like that going on near you check out indymedia, schnews etc.

Check out the internet for loads of info on how other people have done stuff. For example, the Advisory Service for Squatters are an invaluable source of info. Check out their website:
