mayday critical mass
newsgroup posting | 24.03.2002 16:01
Last year's 1/5/01 rides were a dramatic success. Despite intense
media & police provocation, the two simultaneous early morning
protest rides, from the east and the west, were colourful, lively
and entirely peaceful. Over 800 riders, plus many more
supporters, converged triumphantly on Kings Cross for a late
breakfast in a noisy, joyful, musical atmosphere. So many people
had so much fun making their concerns and voices heard……that we
thought someone should organise it again - but a little
differently.
The focus, and rallying cry, on 1/5/02 critical masses this year,
will be "Ride For Your Life!" Choose car culture & capitalism,
which means quite literally death; or life and freedom. The
choice is ours.
Full details of the rides are still to be firmed up, but there
will be 2 rides, both meeting up approx 7.30am. To reflect the
fact that people south of the river felt a bit left out last
year………there will be one coming up from the south, starting
around Camberwell Green; and one coming down from the north, from
the Camden Town area. The aim is to meet up near the US Embassy
about 10am to protest the US exportation of car culture & oil
dependency - and their consequences, amongst other things (and
currently there are many other things!)……before regrouping around
lunchtime at Speakers Corner to participate in the M.y Fayre in
M.....r. We do need more people to help with keeping the rides
safe, particularly the south ride - get in touch if you are up
for it (contact details at end).
All bikes, skates, boards, wheelchairs, scooters, and anything on
wheels with no engine are welcome. Bring music, whistles, fancy
dress, flags, skeleton masks, wigs, leaflets etc. Bring your
friends, family and kids. Above all bring your sense of
solidarity, and your love of life, fun, and freedom.
Please spread the word as widely as you can - come ride, play &
protest on 1/5/02.

Unite for Mayday!

What do people think about uniting with the United Against War and Privatisation March which sets off after lunch to Trafalgar Square following the Critical Mass and US embassy actions? It's a pretty important march as its the first time the trade unions are organising alongside others outside their circle. Hopefully they've got a taste of the massive 3 million march in Rome and the Barcelona demo and are inspired. It would be great if we learn from our European camereros and get together to show Blairusconi what we think of him and his Axis of Evil with Bush and Aznar.

But the march and rally could be plenty big. A lot of trade unionists are well hacked off, and the massive Rome demo has encouraged folk. UNISON and CWU are both encouraging their members in London to turn out. More info:
