Protest on Oxford street Calls for boycott of Israili goods, protestors assaulted by store security

Today saw a noisy and vibrant protest outside the Selfridges department store on Oxford street. The demonstration, to draw attention to the Palistinian struggle and the use of Palestinian sweatshop labour in the making of many Israili goods was well received by passers by. Selfridges stocks many items produced with this sweatshop labour. Street theatre included a symbolic reenactment of the brutal treatment of Palestinians by the Israeli occupying force, and a dramatic percussion band. After marching around the huge building several times, many protestors and the band gained entry to the store, and a furious fight began with the store security in which many protestors were openly assaulted in front of police, including one minor sexual assault of a band member. However the protest did not give up, and were there for some time after the violent scene. Some protestors, as well as being violently assaulted had their possessions confiscated, but some others managed to snatch these back. The plain clothes store detectives were particularly brutal, and would give good reason for a boycott of Selfridges in themselves.

And in Manchester too

Biggest demo yet outside Marks&Sparks in Manchester. Lots of leaflets given out, and a samba band turned up that wasn't even scheduled ( actually they're there every week for practise but it added to the picket).

If anyone out there shops at The Eighth Day wholefood shop on Oxford Road in Manchester, please let 'em know that their stocking of apartheid Israeli products ( they stock Tivali meat substitues)is unacceptable for a supposedly ethical business. Infinity Foods in Brighton is also a culprit, so lets clean up our own backyards as well eh?

Here's The Eighth Day's email address so get buggin' 'em.

Al-Fayed: ultimate hypocrite

24.03.2002 00:57

Muhammed Al-Fayed is the owner of Selfridges. He claims the British state assassinated his son because they did not want a member of the royal family being knocked up by a Muslim. But as for Muslim solidarity, Al-Fayed doesn't give a shit. Selfridges continues to stock illegal settlement products from the occupied Palestinian territories, produced by people who have stolen the land in the name of a warped and twisted version of Judaism. Al-Fayed is not simply content with promoting corruption in the UK by giving back-handers to the likes of Neil Hamilton - he's quite happy to promote the economic interests of those who persecute members of his own religion. What a complete fucker.

Al Fayhed, aka "The Phoney Pharao" is a businessman, so of course he's a hypocrite.

But he owns HARRODS, not Selfridges. Do yer bluddy research!

And in Belfast too

24.03.2002 18:52

A picket held in solidarity with the palestinans was held outside the Tesco metro in the city centre of Belfast on saturday afternnon, much to the annoyance of the management, they even called the cops. Who in fairness to them said we could 'work away'. Happy days- maybe all these police protests in London are having some affect after all.
