The truth about Yarls Wood detention centre

John | 22.03.2002 20:07

The failure of the UK asylum system.

On the 17th January Home Secretary David Blunkett opened what was announced as Europe's biggest asylum centre. It was a lavishly appointed establishment in Yarl's Wood, Bedfordshire, which had cost £100 million. In a Daily Mail report the following day, it was observed that the facilities at Yarl's Wood would not be out of place in a luxury hotel.

The centre was designed to accommodate illegal immigrants whose applications for settlement in the UK had been turned down and were awaiting deportation. Not any old facilities for these people! Despite the fact that in entering this country they had broken our laws, the attitude of the Government was: nothing but the best for them! While waiting to go home (it they are ever sent there!) they were able to enjoy video games, satellite TV, two gyms, weight-training rooms, outdoor five-a-side football pitches, volleyball and basketball. NHS patients lying on trolleys in our Third World-standard hospitals would have envied them.

But were the immigrants grateful to the British Government and taxpayers for all these mod cons? Just a month afterwards they gave their answer. Following some dispute over a woman thought to be from Eastern Europe who had complained about lack of medical treatment, a large-scale riot broke out. Officers were attacked, and the rioting inmates started a series of fires throughout the buildings. In one incident four female nurses were locked in the medical centre by detainees, then burning paper was pushed under the locked door. Fortunately, the nurses escaped just in time.

There was then a break-out of some 23 inmates. Ten were subsequently captured quite quickly afterwards, but the remainder got away.

Fire damage has been estimated at £38 million.

To say there are red faces at the Home Office in consequence of this incident would be to understate the case. Our politicians have been telling us for years that we must be nice to the asylum-seekers, that they are poor, innocent people mostly fleeing from persecution, that the Government has the asylum system under control and that in due course all the applications will be sorted out to the satisfaction of everybody. In the meantime, there has been mounting public anger at the inability of the authorities to control the flood and, not least, at the vast public expense that has been incurred in providing the gate-crashers with living quarters, allowances and additional amenities such as those at Yarl's Wood. In fact, once it has been ruled that people have entered this country illegally they should be dispatched with the minimum of delay and in the meantime housed in the most basic of conditions.

But taking an overview of the matter, we should recognise that the reason these people have come to Britain in the first place is that word has got around the countries from which they come that we are the softest touch of all the developed, western nations; that we have a government that cares more for immigrants than for its own people and will bend over backwards to give the newcomers everything that they demand - while sometimes criminalising indigenous citizens who dare to object. The UK has become Tom Tiddler's Ground for all humanity. If you're prepared to take the risks getting here, mate, once you arrive you've got it made!

Of course, we should not take it out on all the asylum-seekers for the incendiary activities of a few. No doubt, for the troublemakers and arsonists at Yarl's Wood there were plenty others who were appreciative of their treatment (they damned well should be!) and just wanted to go home peacefully.

But the fiasco of Yarl's Wood adds up to a devastating indictment of Tony Blair's Government: for the soft and weak way in which it has dealt with the invaders, for the delay in kicking them out and for the ridiculous public expense it has incurred in giving them hand-outs and luxuries which only encourage more to come.

The Government's asylum policy has gone up in smoke - literally in the case of Yarl's Wood. But will lessons be learned? Knowing this gang, we doubt it.

stop conning desperate war refugees

Eastern european refugees are flocking to the UK, from their homelands, because the british government has bombed their fuking houses and towns in Yugoslavia to rubble. What once was a thriving modern cities and villages are now desolate wasteland, thanks to the foreign policies of the british and US governments and their so called humanitarian/military intervention. This is what happens when we go into foreign countries club footed, we have given these european and afghani refugees the wrong signals and the impression, that we actually cared about their welfare, because we took the mistaken route of intervening militarily in these peoples internal affairs, these people actually think that we did this because we liked them and were on their sides, no wonder their flocking over here, its all thanx to the stupidity of Bush and poodle Blur.

Isn't it built on a chemcal waste tip?

One thing that nobody I've seen seems to have picked up on is that this supposed holiday camp style detention centre near Twinwoods / Milton Ernest seems to be built on a site where mustard gas or other chemical warfare agents were dumped at the end of the second world war.

not quite

they found a few cans of mustard gas from ww2 at a spinney that was there before a wacking great detention centre was built. the local gov. said it had become harmless over time. i don't see why they'd be lying as it was the MOD who dumped it there so would get the blame if it wasn't.

anyway. back to yugoslavia. 1900 to 1920's they were fucked over by the austro-hungarians, they enjoyed a brief restbite and then yugoslavia was occupied by germany and albania by italy in WW2. then there came the russians of course, nuff said. then as soon as they were getting there shit together we started bombing them, because as we all know this is the quickest route to introduce democracy to the savages. the nation hasn't known anything but oppression, and that can be attributed a great deal to western europe.

So having an opinion other to yours makes me

24.03.2002 17:19

Having an opinion that isn't a communist/marxist/etc one makes me a "Nazi infiltrator" then? I thought this was supposed to be independent (i.e UNBIASED) media. Is this going to be unbiased or is it going to be a platform for the left ONLY ? Either way, state what it is or be prepared to have people with alternative views airing those. If you disagree with my views, then argue it out fairly.

No platform. No engagement.

dh is undoubtedly right; John/Jack?jko is VERY well informed on the BNP and the far-right; this website is being hijacked by fascists. One poster, Daniel Brett, has already announced his decision to jump ship because of the apparent free rein being given to these muppets. Indymedia- sort it out!

hey hey it's the Nazis!

Classic BNP strategy. Post comments under lots of different names, then folk might think there's more of you! And, as Hitler advised, tell some really big lies:

Lie: "Refugees are criminals". No they aren't. Their only crime is expecting to find safe refuge here.
Lie: "Refugees live in luxury". No they don't. Anyone who actually knows any refugees knows that.
Lie: "Refugees get all the money". No they don't. IMC readers know very well where the money really goes; the global corporations and their fat cat bosses and owners.

The BNP may claim to oppose capitalism, but in truth they protect the bosses, by mis-directing anger at scapegoats.

So why post here, if no-one will believe them? Well, there's a subtler reason, which is to try to de-moralise us by making us think their ideas really are popular with the majority. In fact, every street and estate in my experience has an anti-fascist, anti-racist majority, if only we can organise and mobilise.

Not Quite, Internationalist.

Racist ideas are more popular among ordinary people than you suppose. They may be less acceptable than they have ever been in the past, but they are certainly there. Try telling someone who imagines assylum seekers are living the life of Riley, that they are treading the same path as the fascists and watch the reaction. That puts a different complexion on things. These ideas can only be challenged at grass roots level by engaging in one to one debate with racists and pointing out they are helping perpetuate capitalism. That's different from hectoring people which is what some groups imagine constitutes anti-racist campaigning. Most racists are working class people because the working class make up the majority of the population. It's working class people who are uniquely positioned to fight fascism. That (and talented black footballers) is why racist chanting has disappeared from football matches and why it will disappear from the workplace/pub/shops/home. Lectures from middle class liberals are a turn off. Ask any working class person.
