BCN: BREAKING NEWS

Anarchist Rioter | 15.03.2002 15:15

Serious rioting has broken out at the EU summit at Barcelona. In one incident, peaceful protestors were baton-charged by riot police. Then at 2:25 pm local time, a big confrontation broke out on Las Ramblas, the city´s main walking street.

10:45 am (local time): The "Lobby Busters" demo is attacked by riot cops near the Sagrada Familia. The incident was provoked by the arrival of Critical Mass cyclists - the demo (numbering about 1500 people) then began to trickle onto the road, blocking the traffic. Without any provocation, the police began to beat demonstrators with batons. The crowd was baton-charged three times before the cops finally backed off.

2 pm: A large crowd has gathered outside the Liceu metro station for another demonstration. There are probably about 2,000 activists, including a couple of hundred Black Block. It is obvious that a confrontation is going to occur with the riot police, who have deployed officers with batons and guns that fire rubber bullets.

2.25 pm: Something has kicked off at the front of the crowd. The cops repeatedly baton-charge the crowd in order to disperse us. Masked activists are running onto the back streets. There is some minor property damage.

3 pm: The confrontation continues. Many tourists and local people have been beaten up by the cops. Someone must have been badly injured, because there are ambulances trying to get into the crowd. Something is on fire - I discover that some recycling bins have been set alight outside the Meridien Hotel. However, the clashes are gradually becoming more sporadic. Most people I speak to have been beaten, though injuries (including mine) are fairly minor.

4 pm: The cops have left and the crowd has mostly dispersed. However, the trouble is probably not over yet. Another event is due to start in the city centre in less than two hours´ time.

Update, 21:00 hours

15.03.2002 20:11

The "Circus against Capitalism" and the Latin American solidarity demo have passed off peacefully. Most activists have dispersed, though there are still large numbers of riot police in the city centre.

Tomorrow (Saturday) there will be huge demo near the Place Catalunya, and there is a high probability that some trouble will occur.

Unusual...

15.03.2002 20:23

I usually agree with most of the stuff Anarchist Rioter posts, but I think to describe what happened this afternoon as a "serious riot" I think is a gross overstatement. I don't even think it can be classified as a riot!

The pigs baton charged us (about 800 people), hurt loads of people and nicked a couple, then people chucked a bottle or two and about three outdoor chairs, then a few dustbins got set alight. Cops hit more people and fired rubber bullets (didn't see them myself, but I believe AR); it all lasted about an hour. That, IMHO, is not a riot.

Tomorrow on the other hand...

Police Riot!

16.03.2002 09:24

Sorry, red´n´black . . . I meant a Police Riot! (Is there any other kind these days?)

I was wrong about last night - there was more trouble to the north of the city - the Spanish TV news showed yet more riot cops laying into another protest with repeated baton charges. There was also a lovely sequence filmed on Las Ramblas, depicting an activist attempting to hand a flower to a riot cop. The cop ignored him, but one of his collegues then aims a staggering high kick, which hits the unfortunate activist fair and square in the face! And all this happened on the "International Day of Action Against Police Brutality"! International Day OF Police Brutality, more like.

Capitalism is effectively dead. The moment an ideology has to be (repeatedly) defended at the point of a truncheon, it´s all over. It might take some years, but believe me, we´re gonna win in the end. When George Orwell wrote "if you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face for ever" (1984), he hadn´t counted on us lot!!!
