IMAGES OF AN EXECUTION

Eleven photographs taken by an amateur photographer from his window in east Jerusalem have caused outrage in the Arabic media, which allege they show the summary execution of a Palestinian militant.

The killing of Mohammed Salah by Israeli police on 8 March 2002

The following material relates to the extrajudicial killing of Palestinian Mahmoud Salah by a Israeli Border Police unit, on Friday 8 March 2002, in Beit Hanina, Jerusalem.

Included, screen captures of images from a video of the execution with the article and original captions as published in today's Al-Hayat Al-Jadeeda (Palestine), two wire service reports from Agence France Presse, and other articles.

Together -- through visual evidence and eyewitness interviews, juxtaposed next to a record of official statements made by Israeli police spokesmen -- a picture emerges that clearly contradicts the Israeli version of events.

Nasty, nasty world

15.03.2002 07:36

These are some nasty images, but this guy really did have a bomb on him, and was in the process of going to kill someone else. Fuck all killers, soldiers and police, on both sides of this insane conflagration and everywhere on our planet. They should all be dead and buried so the rest of us can live in peace and not in bloodshed like this.
So many nasty vicious humans. Makes me very sad.

Three aspects of the event pictured above undermine the various Israeli versions of the event:

The suspect was under control for more than half an hour before he was executed, according to witnesses. This is supported by the images above, which depict a series of different police officers and others in a variety of positions in the frame and performing a variety activities over some period of time.
Salah is thrown against the jeep according to witnesses, and a beating is pictured and noted in Al-Hayat Al-Jadeeda's captions at one point. The suggestion that soldiers would violently beat or shake someone they believed had a bomb strapped to them is not credible. Similarly, if there was a real bomb threat, how is it that so many Israeli police and police vehicles are pictured in the immediate vicinity of Salah in almost every frame?
The AFP article states that: "According to Israeli security sources, Salah was wearing a large overcoat and policemen opened fire when he refused to take it off." Yet Saleh is depicted both alive and in his underwear in image number 5.
