Statement issued by National Coalition of Anti Deportation Campaigns, following the death of an Iranian asylum seeker in Birmingham.

On Tuesday 12th March 2002, asylum seeker Mohsen Amri took his life in a room in Handsworth, Birmingham.

Mohsen came to the UK two years ago from Iran. He had not been allowed to work and had just received the news that his asylum claim had been refused.

He has no family in the UK but his many friends do not wish to let Mohsen's tragic death pass unnnoticed.

His friends are firmly of the opinion that Mohsen's death was brought about by the cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment that he received from the Home Office and the National Asylum Support System (NASS). The Home Office did not take his claim for asylum seriously and whilst waiting for this unbearable news he had to live under the NASS system, which neither supports asylum seekers nor provides a service.

Deep sadness and anger are the mixed emotions that his friends are feeling at the moment, but they have decided that Mohsen's death should not pass without protest and that in the immediate future some kind of protest will be held.

NCADC and the International Federation of Iranian Refugees will fully support any actions to mark the sad and tragic death of Mohsen Amri.
