Earlier this afternoon, Catalans and people from all over Spain, and beyond, converged on Placa Catalunya, Barcelona, to voice their opposition to the Goverment's National Hydrological Plan (PHN). (article 1)

Amongst other things, the Plan includes the privatisation of the water supply and the re-routing of a river which would cause droughts for many small farmers.

The demonstration was massive - one radio report put the number attending at 400 000, although other sources put it closer to 100 000 - however it only marched around 200m from its starting place to the final rally.

Supporters of Catalan independence were present in large numbers, as were various trades unions.

Police presence today was minimal, a few police cars were in side streets, and they seemed anxious not to anger the huge crowd.
