Tunisia reiterates support to Palestinian Authority and
leadership of President Arafat

Tunis, 8 March 2002

Tunisia expressed today its "continued and unwavering support to the
Palestinian people and to the Palestinian authority under the
leadership of President Yasser Arafat"

The new expression of support came in a statement issued today by
the Tunisian ministry of Foreign Affairs and in which it "emphasized
the pressing need for urgent action by members of the international
community, especially the United States of America, the Russian
Federation, the European Union and the sponsors of the Middle East
peace process so as to make sure the UN security Council
expeditiously sets up an emergency mechanism aimed at putting an
end to the dangerous escalation in the Palestinian territories and
protecting the Palestinian people according to the call already made
by President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali during the extraordinary Arab
summit held in Cairo on October 2000".

The statement said, "there is no alternative" to the Palestinian
authority under the leadership of President Yasser Arafat, "for the
continuation of the peace process in the region and the consecration
of all the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, especially its right
to the establishment of its independent state with Al Qods Al Shareef
as its capital".
