The Simon Jones Memorial Campaign is calling a national day of action
against profiteering employment agencies on Wednesday 24th April 2002, the
fourth anniversary of Simon's death.

24th April National day of action against casualisation

We are asking supporters of our campaign across the country and internationally to mark the anniversary of
Simon's death by demonstrating, in whatever way they see fit, at an employment agency in their area that profits from the casualisation that killed Simon.

Simon Jones was killed in 1998 on his first day of work at Shoreham Docks. He was sent there without training or experience by Brighton-based employment agency Personnel Selection. By law, this employment agency should have checked that the job Simon was sent to was safe for him - they didn't. Despite their clear breach of the law, Personnel Selection have never been prosecuted for their role in Simon's death. Like employment agencies up and down the country, they are able to profit from casual labour without being held accountable for the safety of the workers they employ.

Carly North of the Simon Jones Memorial Campaign says, "Employment agencies make huge profits by providing cheap labour for companies who prefer casual labour rather than a well trained, decently paid workforce. The campaign
wants to highlight this with a national day of action against employment agencies that put profit before people."

If you are interested in taking part in the day of action please email  simonjonesaprilaction@hotmail.com (rather than replying to this message)and we will get back to you. In particular, let us know if

* you have any suggestions for employment agencies to target in your area
* you would like to be put in touch with others in your area who may be planning something.

In Brighton, Simon's family and others will take be taking action against the Personnel Selection branch that sent Simon to his death.

PLEASE GET IN TOUCH AND MAKE THIS A DAY OF ACTION TO REMEMBER! We need support from individuals, union branches, safety organisations, local groups, whatever. We look forward to hearing from you...
