Something Happened

A report on the Saturday 2 March ‘Stop the War’ demonstration in central London.

Yes, something happened. A group of people, apparently uncontaminated by the institutional inertia of ‘No War But The Class War’ or the disinterested analysis of professional communists, sat down in Piccadilly Circus and stopped the traffic on Saturday’s demonstration.

The sit-down lasted for about half an hour and the numbers fluctuated from anywhere between 10 and 100. Those involved were mainly very young, but there were some not so young (The last to stand up were two middle-aged women who waited until a policeman threatened to arrest them “for their own safety” before doing so). Some were anarchists -others may have been SWP aligned but were too excited to toe the party line.

Most freaked out by the sit-down were the stewards who continually and systematically harangued every person on the ground, using all the arguments in the book. As usual they didn’t like ‘their’ demonstration being hijacked. Some people engaged in argument with the stewards, others ignored them. Often they were drowned out with chants of “One, Two, Three, Four , Everybody on the floor!”

When eventually everyone moved off together, accompanied by a drum beat, one of the previously haranguing stewards started dancing, maybe out of relief that we were finally moving, but perhaps also because he wanted in on the fun too.

sit down

just to add:

this action was planned 2 minutes before we got to piccadilly circus and was intiated by 3 anarchists. It was a great reaction of everyone else to sit down, togther we made a group of people who were entirely unconnected but felt we had to do something more important than just ambling along to trfalgar sq in silence. The stewards are just useless asshoels who tried to do the cop's job, that didnt work. The cops didnt harras us which was nice. We had loads of random ppl watchign from piccadilyl circus. We didnt manage to distrbute a message but we drew attention and i hope others felt like us, thats stupdi hijakced SWP demos where 90% of the ppl walk without doing anything are doing fuck all.

wonko the sane

Agreed

Agreed. Personally, I'm getting rather sick of playing the numbers game in vain hope that the media will pain attention to our arguments and this, in turn, might affect politicians.

I've been on many demo's before, and now I'm getting quite sick of being totally ignored and sometimes not even being reported on. Meanwhile, the war goes on, people are dying, Capitalism is destroying the planet...

...and we don't do anything but walk from one location to another location after asking for permission by the police one month in advance.

I'm so sick of this. Something has got to change.

We're talking about the possibility of WWIII, here, folks.

Is this the best we can do?

Shame

This almost totally spontaneous deviation from the party line was brilliant and a million times more inspiring than any of the speeches at the rally at the end. Such a shame it didn't last longer, but unfortunately there just weren't enough people. I have to confess that I, like several other people, were too concerned about arrest to stay seated for long, but I refused to leave and defended those sitting down in several arguments with the stewards ("Is this a demonstration or a walk in the park?").

Interesting to note that despite the absolutely massive number of Socialist Worker placards in the deom, I don't think there was even one in the smal group of people involved in this.

The real problem was the lack of people as one of the stewards said sit-ins only work when there are hundreds of people involved. While we ignored most of what they said, this might be a useful piece of advice. Perhaps for the next major demo we should organise a sit-in at Picaddily Circus, get hundreds of people involved and then see the police and their steward cronies try and move us on!

Fuck The War!
Fuck The System!
Fuck The party Line!

The people have to strike

03.03.2002 19:58

The only thing that will stop it is if everyone -EVERYONE!!!! - stops going to work (as long as it's not critically important such as hospitals etc), paying their mortgage, driving their car, everything that keeps the system fed. Are you up to it??!

(A)narchy is'nt round this corner

Devana,I got this itch that not'everyone'would do this at the same time and i really do doubt the state with all its protection services with money and power to protect would join the mass call to drop everything,so we'd have a bloody battle on our hands...then what?

The new age travellers were the last best attempt to drop out but unfortunately the rest of the planet did'nt join them.

maybe the next though?

Why battle?

04.03.2002 08:17

I do not follow your logic.
If enough people - of course not everyone, I mentioned hospitals for one - just stopped, why would there be a battle?
In my country people massed into Charles Square to protest peacefully and brought an end to a wicked regime. What? - would they shoot people for standing together? I certainly would not join in a fight. Why does your mind turn to violence - too much TV?
Peaceful resistance WORKS!

Just to make a correction

I too was onthe sit down in Picadilly Circus. I was glad that someone had started it and was most disappointed when we got up again. Personally I think if we had stayed down and the police had moved against us more people would have joined. I was prepared to be arrested if it came to that. It's time for direct ation if only to overome the media blak out on anti-war stuff.

The US is embarking on yet an other imperialist war, and we wanto stop it. If people aren't prpared to face the british police force, and let's face it they are a bunch of pussy cats compared with the police forces that most people around the world fighting for justice face then are we really ever going to change the world.

On another note I am a member of the SWP and I saw at least to others on the sit down. The SWP is not the monolith that people make it out to be (luckily).

Stewards need pig jackets...

07.03.2002 19:51

Hey there... we were in the sit in too... the stweards were acting worse than the pigs, trying to herd us into Trafalger Sq,why?? So the pigs can squash us all together nicely and keep us inline? The only way anyone is going to take notice of these demos is if something really happens, not just a police aranged walk around london... speaking of which, is everyone going to the piggie's demo?? Now the pigsa get to feel the other end of it.....

Love & @anarchy!
