ANTI-WAR PROTESTERS “LOCK ON” TO DOWNING ST GATES.

ARROW (Active Resistance to the Roots of War), a London-based non-violent direct action group, responded today, Monday 25 February 2002, to the news that Tony Blair supports the idea of war on Iraq and is intending to travel to Washington in London to confirm US/UK war plans.

Emily Apple, Emily Johns, David Polden and Milan Rai were briefly locked to the gates at the end of Downing Street, before being cut free by police at 12.15pm.

Milan Rai, a member of ARROW, said, ‘Mr Blair is ignoring his party, his Cabinet, and the opinions of his European allies. He is ignoring British public and parliamentary opinion, and he is ignoring the rules of international law regarding the use of force. This is thoroughly anti-democratic and illegal.

“There is an overwhelming case for non-violent resistance to the Bush/Blair war plans, and we intend to make the Pledge of Resistance a major network of opposition and non-violent disruption. We promise that Mr Blair will not be able to ignore the new wave of non-violent resistance he has provoked.’

ARROW is sponsoring a Pledge of Resistance to the US/UK war - 51 people have already signed. See www.justicenotvengeance.org for details of the pledge.

ARRROW is a non-violent civil disobedience group set up in 1990 which produces anti-war information briefings.
