Indymedia switzerland has shut itself down. Within the leftist community of Zürich there has been a terribly unpleasant conflict about antisemitic postings on indymedia.(the same postings were also published on indymedia u.k.)
There is also a very strong feeling against the policy of open posting, so to cool down the discussion, indymedia went offline. The matters in question should be discussed in public, face to face.
Indymedia is also being accused by a group of (former)leftists and the d.a. is investigating, but this is not the main reason they went offline. There has been a meeting of leftists which tried to establish a discussion about what to do, if there are people(former friends and commrades) imposing their point of view by legal means and with the assistance of the police.
Unfortunately leftists in Switzerland as in other germanspeaking countries tend to adopt authoritarian points of view very easily. There is a very strong hatred of former Antiimperialist and the so called Antigerman fraction of the marxist left, which is making all improvement of ideas impossible, and which disolves the former radical left, as it was called up to now, completely.
They seem to be trying to dominate all of the left not with their ideas, but with this horrible, sens- and meaningless debate they suffocate all alternative standpoints.
From an antiauthoritarian point of view, there is hardly a difference between them.

protest self-censorship

If Nice Persons analysis is correct, then those of us who have some conception of free speech as important. I dont think we need an Indymedia that is self-censoring, although I understand the need to keep overt racism and other kinds of discriminatory behaviour off the wire. The interpretation of this is very difficult - I speak as someone who has had one or two contributions hidden, and someone who has managed to revive one or two contributions through complaint or re-posting. I'd hate to think that uk im would choose to close itself down while it contemplates its own position. How self-defeating and fitting for the elite's agenda.

The closdown is not as much selfdefeating, but the only way to prevent grevious bodily harm for the people collaborating with the state. all that would have been needed was the publication of their names, and off they would have gone.
I hope, that IM switzerland will soon be back, more a threat to the elites than ever before.
