National Coordination of Democratic Jurists
We have learned:
- that yesterday 20.2.2002, a search was carried out by order of the Procurator Adjunct of Genova, Dr. Pellegrino, at the Office of the Association of Democratic Jurists of Bologna, at the studio of Lawyer Desi Bruno, looking for photographic/video documentation relative to the occurrences in Genova last July.
- that the search proved negative.
- That no request for such material was received by the Association or its members.
Observation
1. The Association of Democratic Jurists of Bologna (prev. Democratic Legal Initiative) is part of the National Coordination of the Democratic Jurists.
2. The Coordination, last July had agreed to be available to participate as observers in the demonstrations at Genova, and also as a potential deterrent, and to guarantee the respect of democratic freedom against violence, and in this regard, it had also been in touch with the Genovese Magistrature before the demonstrations.
3. Following the tragic outcome of the situation, the Coordination had also arranged to act as collector of complaints and related material, and to ensure its members would take on any eventual defensive responsibilities, both of those being investigated and of the victims.
4. Any defensive action, which later combined with the Genoa Legal Forum always took place in full respect of the law, and in collaboration with the Magistrature with a view to finding the truth.
We believe that any photo/video material that may have been present, could have been obtained from the Public Prosecutor’s office in Genova by means of a simple request.
It is considered this sets a dangerous precedent
And this is a serious attack on the freedom of thought and association.
To clarify what happened a meeting has been requested with the Chief Procurator of Genova with whom the Coordination will express the wish to continue the fight to defend citizens’ rights in full respect of democratic laws. Bologna 2l.2.2002.
