Colombian Paramilitary Threaten Massacres on the Pacific Coast

Bob Everton | 18.02.2002 21:44

Colombian Paramilitary from the AUC are threatening to attack the Afro communities along the Pacific coast. They are recruiting a force of 1,500 troops for what will likely be a bloodbath.

February 16
OFFENSIVE OF THE PARAMILITARY MOVEMENT ON THE PACIFIC COAST OF COLOMBIA
Black Communities of the Yurumanguí y Lower Naya Rivers Threatened by Massacres

On the 12 of February it was confirmed that 400 paramilitary troops from AUC advanced into the region of the municipality Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca, where they announced that they will enter Naya and Yurumanguí rivers "with blood and fire to exterminate the guerrilla".

Since that date the following has occurred:

* It is known that there will be an imminent incursion into the Yurumangui and Naya Rivers by some 1,000 men from the AUC. They continue to contract more paramilitary troops in the urban belt of Buenaventura, in order to raise the number of their troops to 1,500 men.

* Likewise, it is known that the paramilitary are using a boat which they have used before (in Samurai or Samuray) that is well identified with them. In spite of their changing of colour and identification marks on the boat, it has been identified by the local townspeople.

* The entry into the Yurumanguí and Naya Rivers is scheduled to occur on Monday, February 18, 2002.

* The mission they announced for themselves was to "wipe out the guerrilla and to clean out the zone of sympathizers".

From what we know, the attack is likely to be by land, hiking over the low hills, crossing the neighbouring rivers and by water, through the inlets in the coastal zone.

IT IS URGENT TO CREATE THE NECESSARY MATERIAL CONDITIONS FOR THE SECURE EVACUATION OF THE CIVILIAN POPULATION.
