Origins of the Present Crisis (1964) by Perry Anderson

D Sposa Balincom | 12.02.2002 17:56

One of the most important articles ever to appear in a British left wing journal ( "New Left Review"), since the days of Marx and "The Peoples Paper"

Unfortunately NLR hasnt yet managed to get it online, but a trawl through the other works of the time show just what an impact this short article had. Check the link to order a back copy or write and ask for a photocopy, or something.
Anderson takes a wry look at the history of the left in Britain since the days of the Diggers, Cromwell, &c. What has gone wrong with English history ? Why is the most maturely industrialised society also the least radical, flouting Marxs hopes ? Why do we all flounder in a sea of public apathy to leftwing ideas ? The enquiry answers more questions in far fewer words than any other Ive ever read, apart from the 1848 Manifesto itself. Even if youre not at all inclined to read Marxist literature, make this an exception. Itll change your perspective, and boost your confidence , I guarantee.
