amnesty International delegation was refused access to NYC federal detention facilityhousing post 9/11 Muslim prisoners.
Following the arrests of more than 1200 people since the 9/11 attacks,Amnesty tried to investigate the conditions of the Metropolitan Detention Centre in NYC.The MDC holds more than 40 Muslims from the Middle-East or South Asia.
Some detainees have been allegedly held for months, with little or no exercise and 24hr lighting to stop them from sleeping.
'These conditions are particularly disturbing as the detainees have not been charged w/criminal offences and many are reportedly detained for minor visa violations for which they would not be ordinarily held in custody.' (Amnesty International)
They are reported to be held in harsh conditions in sealed, high-security cells
