Hundreds of people from all over the UK and beyond have been blockading Faslane nuclear base from 7 this morning using their bodies and a variety of fancy and hardy lock-ons. The Naval Base is guilty of possession of nuclear weapons and thus in contravention of international law (as well as downright immoral and BAD), inviting direct action from anyone willing to take on this job. A large number of people have come to the blockade from Sweden, as well as from Japan, Scotland and Australia (and well they should come from Oz: that’s one of the sources of the uranium that starts the whole process).

The four entrances to the base are blocked currently and as lock-ons are broken and removed, new people are needed to replace them. A 3-day blockade hasn’t been attempted before and it will test our endurance and the concentration span of the police. The atmosphere around both main gates is cheerful despite the odd gale, with a lot of music and creativity dancing around clusters of police (favourite banner so far: ‘police against nukes’).

Faslane Peace Camp has been actively opposing weapons of mass destruction for nearly 20 years and uses its proximity to the base to do frequent spontaneous actions as well as providing support for the blockade.
