Apres La Deluge ?

Washout ? Rained off ? Splashing in puddles ? What happened to the proposed action in support of Palestine ?

Its raining heavily in London this saturday afternoon, but Im surprised to find that this seems to have put the enraged masses off attending the proposed demonstration at the Israeli Embassy in Kensington. Who organised it ? Noreena Hertz ?
Well, this is typical of the entire anti-war movement here. Oppose war so long as its convenient, and your friends approve, and its not raining. It reminds me a little of the Kosovo demos in 1999. By the end of that year, "Stop the Bombing" (same slogan !) had been forgotten, and about five people turned up to protest NATO warships in the Docklands.

Oh, to hell with it ! Perhaps the Palestinian people can get by without our help.

Well . . .

Given the exceptionally poor weather and early start (too many students still nursing their hangovers), the turnout at the Israeli embassy demo was actually quite good. We had about 500 people - some SWP comrades, some Palestinian activists, and even a few anarchos.

In answer to your question, the action was organised by the Stop the War Coalition. And no, I don't think the anti-war movement is fizzling out. There was going to be a national anti-war demonstration in central London this weekend - this event will now take place on February 23rd.

Anarchist Rioter

the march was about the same size as the justice not vengeance march to Whitehall of last november, which took place between the two big stop the war marches, and in similar weather. Thought the turnout was good in the circumstances.
