Police on a killing Spree
12.01.2002 13:07
Unconfirmed reports say an LDU officer was shot in the chest, died instantly and the one killed is said to be a student whose identities could not readily be established.
Police used live ammunition to disperse the crowd consisting of several political party heads including former Presidential candidates, Aggrey Awori of UPC, Chappa Karuhanga of the National Democratic Forum (NDF) and Kibirige Mayanja of the JEMA party who insisted on holding the rally.
Our reporter at the scene says the crowd was singing pro-Obote songs. Former President Milton Obote is the founder of the UPC party.
The UPC black and red flag and Obote’s picture has been displayed at Uganda House, the party’s headquarters.
The chairman organising committee of the planned rally Peter Walubiri says several people were beaten up “ we have demonstrated that Uganda Police and government does not support our international struggle against terrorism and dictatorship”.
Meanwhile police had to use tear gas to disperse stone-throwing rowdy Makerere University Students who were reportedly marching to the Constitutional Square to attend the planned UPC rally.
