Louisiana (1025) and TEXAS (1014)
have the highest rates in 1999. They have a full
1% OF THEIR POPULATIONS
INCARCERATED. 1 in every 136
residents in the United States and its Territories was
incarcerated at yearend 2000. Nationwide, it costs well
over $20,000 average per year for each inmate.
BJS: "As of last June 30 [2000], there were 110 female
inmates per 100,000 women in the U.S., compared
to 1,297 per 100,000 men."

The U.S. drug-war inmate MAJORITY is calculated by adding together prisoners who have committed drug crimes, drug-related crimes (such as robbing to get money for drugs that are expensive because of the drug war), drug trade crimes, drug-related parole violations, etc..
