Protest - 12 January - Support Argenine Struggle

Argentine Solidarity Campaign | 07.01.2002 22:10

A new campaign has been launched to support struggles in Argentina. Our first protest will be outside the World Bank offices in London, on Saturday 12 January, from 12.

At an inaugural meting of the Argentina Solidarity Campaign on 5 January those present decided to immediately set up a campaign around three action points:

* Solidarity with the Argentine uprising
* Cancel the debt
* Release the prisoners - end police repression

We are holding a protest outside the World Bank offices in London, symbol of the international system that condemns countries like Argentina to poverty, on: SATURDAY 12 JANUARY, 12 noon-13.30. World Bank offices are at New Zealand House, 1 Haymarket, London W1

The next planning meeting of the campaign is 15th January at 7.30.pm Exmouth Arms, 1 Starcross St, NW1

Please forward this message to any one who might be interested.

Why demonstrate outside the World Bank against Argentine debt? Most of the debt is with commercial lending banks, not the World Bank. If these banks cancelled the debt, you can be sure that interest rates will go up in countries like Spain and people in Europe will lose their jobs and have their houses repossessed. Debt cancellation is an easy and short-sighted answer to complex problems. It's the battle cry of Bono and the SWP, not a serious anti-capitalist statement. We need to overthrow the system, not play around with debt.
