Pop Scandal - Update

The Ghost of Stalin Stalks the Pop Business.. or is it all hear-say and ugly-rumours ?

As nobody else has been following this story, here is an update.
On Dec 3rd, it was reported here* (with considerable response, including, possibly, one of the business insiders) that strange manouevrings were happening on the Tv show "Pop Idols", a kind of viewer participation extension of the earlier "Pop Stars", and, as Oscar Wilde would have said, "we know what unfortunate incident that led to".
The viewers choice, Rick Waller, had left the programmes producers in dismay. Although he was no more talented than the other contestants, he was rather 'large' for the conventional image of the standard, anorexia-inducing, all- singing and dancing plastic product liable to show up on the screen. It was hypothesised here that he would be 'removed' in the style of the film "Game Show"... in the end, it turned out to be more like Stalin's trial of Bukharin.
It was announced that Rick had gone down with a mysterious throat infection, and the cameras were even on hand to film him accepting the bad news. At the same time, the one judge on the panel of four who had seemed sympathetic to him also vanished, and as if by magic, another contestant who, we are told has charisma but had already been disqualified, came back from the pop-grave.
Two weeks on from this, the 'removed' name of Rick Waller has reappeared in joke form, clearly now fit to be the subject of attacks about his weight. Obviously the viewers choice, his absence is troubling some people, so he must now be villified and demonised as a Trotsky figure in the Stalin Pop Factory.
Meanwhile, Mr Charisma is riding high, and looks set to win the contest soon, whatever that entails.

I did notice the dig at him on Saturday, that was certainly out of order. and i admit i had thoughts of conspiracy when i heard of his illness. but presumably he really did have a throat infection, otherwise he would has kicked up a stink about it.

or are you saying he was poisoned?!

Is this really worth getting bothered about.

If you watch Pop Idols then you are part and parcel of the package/"problem"

And if you don't, then why should it bother you which teenaged ego-maniac gets their record deal and resultant 15 minutes.

Or shuold we all stand shoulder to shoulder with that angel voiced porker... pick your causes

sheeeeeesh.

It IS important

08.01.2002 13:09

The fact is that this Pop-Stars business IS important, in the sense that it is cultural phenomenon in which millions of viewers are participating. Anything which elicits such interest among the general populace needs to be discussed. It's not altogether important to anyone here who wins, but how the whole competition is put together for the sake of 'pop' industry profits. The treatment of Fat Rik is a case of body fascism by the media and the corporate music industry. Also, the dearth of black or Asian competitors, the obvious contempt for competitors who want to make their own music, etc, etc, are important when examining how 'idols' are formulated.

Aw, YOU c'mon DB

How can you get so pompous about "does it matter, your mind should be on higher things"? Like everyone else (I presume) using this site, you must be a little selective about what you choose to read, or you'd be logged on all day, every day. And you chose to read this story and then comment. Which, I think it's clear, gives us an insight into how much pop culture does influence us, like it or no. As for Fat Ric, I reckon he's planning the first bulimic supergroup. After all, capitalism can and will market ANY neurosis or disorder.

COMMERICIAL POP EXPLOITS YOUNG PEOPLE AND MESSES THEIR MINDS. IT DISGUSTS ME, AND I CONFIRM THE GENERAL ACCURACY OF THIS ARTICLE

Pure and simple

Yep. Cos "young people" are entirely passive recipients of pop music, empty vessels just waiting to have their heads fucked. Good insight.
