Stop Scapegoating Nurses

Patrick Cooper-Duffy | 02.01.2002 17:24

Time for the politicians to act on health and elderly care. One of the solutions more money for poorly paid nurses.

.
Scapegoating Nurses

The problem of care of the eldery is pressing; politicans need to get a move on.If they wish to keep any kind of credibility.

Its worth noting that the number of nurses from elderly care homes answering
professional misconduct charges each year is two to three times that of any other group.I do not attach specific blames to nurses concerned who are easy scapegoats of institutional abuse and neglect.Such situations are the a product of many factors..

One difficulty is the nurse recruitment and training. There are simply not enough
nurses in circulation. The massive expansion of university education has seen a dramatic fall away of nurses. Those that would like to try are defeated by economics, the benefits system and the downgrading of the practical nurse.

I suggest that 1.A substantial payrise for those at the bottom2.The return of the student nurse to
the workforce 3.The re-intruction of the practical hands on nurse ie State Enrolled.
credibility.
