‘Bin Laden’ Seen At Spanish Bus Station

MURCIA, Spain, Sunday - It was the telephone call authorities all over the world have been waiting for: Osama bin Laden, hunted fugitive and suspected terrorist mastermind, had been spotted.

And he was waiting patiently in a coach station in southeastern Spain for the next bus to Sevilla. For the police patrol sent speeding to the roadstop in Murcia, the description fitted. Two witnesses, a coach driver and a station employee had seen a tall, gaunt figure wearing a turban and a long, grey-streaked beard and peering about with the soft-eyed gaze of the United State’s enemy number one.

But what the officers found — after an excited yet thorough identity check — was not the notorious al-Qaeda leader, but Mohamed Bouchrif, a Moroccan-born Belgian carpenter who had been visiting his son in Spain.

For the amused Bouchrif, who found himself surrounded by media, it was all an understandable error.

“We are all God’s creations and everyone has the same form as He, even if we Muslims look a lot like each other because of our beards, our way of dressing and the way we look around,” he laughed to the cameras. He added, though, as he continued his holiday, that it was the first time such an incident had happened to him.
